Comfortable, Judgment-Free Care at Chicago Style Smiles

If the thought of sitting in a dental chair makes your heart race, you’re not alone. Dental anxiety affects an estimated 36% of the population, and around 12% experience such severe fear that they avoid the dentist entirely, sometimes for years. At Chicago Style Smiles on Michigan Avenue, we’ve spent over four decades treating patients who are nervous, apprehensive, or have had difficult experiences elsewhere. This page is for you.

You Are Not Being Judged

The first thing we want anxious patients to know is that nothing about your teeth, your history, or the length of time since your last visit will surprise or disappoint us. Dental anxiety is a genuine clinical reality, not a personality flaw, and patients who avoid the dentist due to fear typically present with more complex needs, which is exactly the kind of care we’re equipped to provide. We’ve seen it all. We’re not here to lecture; we’re here to help.

What Causes Dental Anxiety?

Dental fear rarely comes from nowhere. Common triggers include:

Previous painful or traumatic experiences

A difficult procedure, especially one experienced in childhood, can create a lasting association between dental care and pain. Modern dentistry has changed significantly, but the emotional memory often hasn’t caught up. We understand this and take it seriously.

Loss of control

Lying back in a chair with instruments in your mouth while someone works on you is an inherently vulnerable position. Many anxious patients describe the feeling of helplessness as the core of their fear, more than the pain itself.

Fear of the unknown

Anxiety is often worst before the appointment, fueled by uncertainty about what will happen, what something will feel like, or what might be found. Patients who haven’t been to a dentist in years frequently dread the judgment or bad news they imagine awaits them.

Sensory sensitivities

The sounds, smells, and physical sensations of a dental environment can be overwhelming for some patients, including those with sensory processing differences, PTSD, or a strong gag reflex.

Embarrassment about dental condition

Many patients delay care precisely because they’re ashamed of what years of avoidance have done to their teeth. This creates a cycle where anxiety causes avoidance, avoidance causes deterioration, and deterioration deepens anxiety. We see this regularly and we know how to break the cycle.

How We Accommodate Anxious Patients at Chicago Style Smiles

A conversation before anything else

Your first appointment doesn’t have to involve any treatment at all if you’re not ready. Many of our most anxious patients start with a simple consultation, a chance to meet the team, see the space, ask questions, and establish trust before committing to any procedure. There is no pressure to do more than you’re comfortable with.

Full transparency throughout

We explain everything before we do it. What instrument we’re picking up, what you’ll feel, how long it will take, and what comes next. You won’t be surprised by anything. If you want us to stop at any point, we stop, no questions asked.

Agreed signals and patient control

We establish a simple signal, typically raising a hand, that means stop immediately. Knowing you have that control changes the experience significantly for most patients. You are never trapped in the chair.

Pacing appointments to your comfort level

We don’t rush anxious patients. If you need more breaks, shorter appointments, or a slower pace of treatment spread across more visits, we accommodate that. Getting the care done in a way that doesn’t traumatise you further is more important than efficiency.

Sedation options

For patients with moderate to severe anxiety, sedation dentistry can make treatment genuinely comfortable rather than merely tolerable. We offer options to discuss at your consultation depending on the procedure and your level of anxiety. Many patients who were previously unable to complete treatment find sedation to be life-changing.

A calm, unhurried environment

Our Michigan Avenue practice is not a high-volume, conveyor-belt dental office. We see patients as individuals and our appointments reflect that. You will not feel rushed, processed, or like a number.

Common Questions From Anxious Patients

What if I haven’t been to the dentist in 5, 10, or 15 years?

This is one of the most common situations we encounter. The anxiety about returning after a long gap is often worse than the appointment itself. Whatever condition your teeth are in, we will assess them honestly, explain your options clearly, and create a treatment plan that works for your timeline and budget, without shame or judgment.

Will it hurt?

Modern anaesthesia is highly effective and we use it generously. We will not proceed with any procedure until you are fully numb, and we check in throughout. If at any point something is uncomfortable, tell us and we will address it before continuing. Pain during treatment is not something you have to accept.

What if I have a bad gag reflex?

A strong gag reflex is a very common source of dental anxiety and one we have significant experience managing. Techniques including positioning, breathing exercises, topical anaesthesia, and pacing can make a significant difference. Please mention it when you contact us so we can plan accordingly from the start.

What if I start to panic during the appointment?

We stop. It is as simple as that. There is nothing in your mouth that cannot wait while you collect yourself, take some breaths, or decide you want to reschedule. Your comfort and wellbeing matter more than completing the appointment on schedule.

Breaking the Cycle of Avoidance

Dental anxiety is self-reinforcing. The longer care is avoided, the more complex problems become, the more treatment is needed when you finally go, and the worse the experience feels, which strengthens the resolve to avoid it again. The most effective way to break this cycle is a single positive experience that proves the reality is different from the fear.

That is what we aim to provide. Not a perfect appointment, not a pain-free guarantee, but an experience where you feel heard, respected, in control, and genuinely cared for. Most patients who come to us describing themselves as dental phobics become regular patients. The turning point is almost always that first appointment where nothing terrible happened.

The Cost of Avoidance

We mention this not to frighten anxious patients but because it’s clinically important. Dental problems rarely resolve on their own and almost always worsen over time. A small cavity that could have been treated with a simple filling becomes root canal territory. Gum disease that could have been reversed with a professional clean progresses to the point of tooth loss. The irony of dental anxiety is that avoidance, the strategy that feels protective, typically leads to exactly the kind of complex, lengthy treatment that anxious patients fear most.

Early intervention, even when anxiety makes it difficult, is almost always the kinder path.

Dental Anxiety and Overall Health

Chronic avoidance of dental care has consequences beyond the mouth. Untreated gum disease is linked to increased risk of heart disease, diabetes complications, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Dental infections, left untreated, can spread. Tooth loss affects nutrition, speech, confidence, and quality of life. Addressing dental anxiety isn’t just about your smile, it’s about your overall health and wellbeing.
